Practical Chemistry for Technicians (NN606)

Chemistry is often the most time consuming of the three sciences for a technician to provide a service for and although the practical general are more reliable there are often greater concerns around health and safety and preparation skills. This course will help you as a technician provide effective chemistry practical work for your students. We will cover how to prepare some common practicals and demonstrations, looking at the health and safety concerns, equipment, sourcing, preparation skills and disposal areas for each practical that’s demonstrated. We will also look at resources you can use and some new and more innovative chemistry practicals you should use in your department. As part of the course we will also spend time evaluating and looking at best practice guidance and regulations on chemical handling and storage.

Outcomes

  • Build confidence in preparing chemistry practicals and making them work
  • Develop your understanding of key health and safety issues with chemistry preparation
  • Evaluate your current chemical storage areas and discuss concerns

If so then this course could be useful for you.  Through a mixture of live online demonstrations, discussions and looking at online resources we will explore a range of common (and not so common) physics practicals and how to make sure they are effectively prepared for the student’s practical experiences. The sessions will be broken down into subject areas exploring key physics topics such as forces, radioactivity, energy, waves, light and electricity and the practical that underpin these topics in lessons. Each practical will look at how to source the material, preparation and troubleshooting, what it is supposed to do, health and safety and clearing up.

Outcomes
